How to clean granite

If you have granite in your home, you know how important it is to properly take care of it. Natural stone is such a beautiful addition to any space, especially granite slabs. Granite can come in many different colors and patterns, which makes it unique and versatile. Many people use granite in many different spaces because it has many positive features.

Many people choose a natural stone because it is incredibly durable. This is often something that people look for when selecting a countertop. Because it will be susceptible to lots of wear and tear, you want something that will stand the test of time when faced with cooking, cleaning and eating.

When choosing what granite slabs you want to go with the biggest factor to consider is what you want it to look like. Since granite is natural and so unique, this means that no two slabs are the same. You want to decide what color and what type of pattern you are looking for so you can find that when you are shopping around. The average price of granite will vary depending on the source of the granite and the cut, but a good ballpark price to consider is about $40 per square foot

Since you are choosing such a unique and luxurious addition to your space, you want to be sure that you do not damage it when cleaning it. Here are some tips on how to clean it properly so it is well taken care of!

Dish soap

A great way to clean your granite countertops on a daily basis is with a mild dish soap. You don’t want to put it directly onto the stone, instead, dilute it a bit with water and apply it with a soft sponge. You don’t want to scratch your stone, so be sure you aren’t using the rough side of your sponge or anything with an abrasive scrubber. A great option would be a microfiber cloth.

You may think because natural stone is so strong and durable you don’t have to worry about staining, but that is not true. If you clean up any spills right away, any staining will likely be very minimal, but if you do happen to accidentally stain your granite slabs, there are some tricks to get rid of it and have it looking brand new again.

If you notice a stain in your granite, you will need to use a poultice. This is a type of cleaner that is mixed with a white absorbent material that will form a paste. The cleaner will work to remove the stain and the absorbent material will collect it as it is removed from the stone.

The best way to use the poultice is to apply it to the stain at about ¼ inch thick. You want to be sure to only apply it to the area with the stain. Next, you will cover the area with plastic wrap and tape the edges down. Leave it for 24 hours, uncover it and leave it again until the poultice is dry. Lastly, use a plastic scraper to scrape away the paste. Clean as normal and your stain should be gone or significantly reduced!
